Youth Spiritual Competitions (YSC)
The YSC started in the year 2001 with the start of the new millennium as a way of encouraging our youth to grow in their faith. The competition is used as a fun way of promoting deeper study and understanding in selected areas: Hymns, Bible Study, and Church Studies… a Spiritual Triathlon of sorts.
Through God’s enormous help and the prayers of our blessed shepherd H.G. Bishop Serapion, the previous years of the YSC have been a great success. The competition is a one day event where teams from all over the diocese meet at one of the churches and enjoy a wonderful day of prayer, food and friendly competition.
The first competition took place at the, then new, Coptic Orthodox Christian Center (C.O.C.C.) with subsequent competitions taking place at different regions in the Diocese (North, East, West, and South). Thank God, more teams and more churches have participated in the competition with every passing year. The initial competition included only two levels, high school and college. However, through God’s provision and care, another level, junior high, was added in 2004. Thank God, this expansion has allowed more people to benefit from preparing and participating in the competition.
An online classroom has been created for youth study. All youth:

Some sayings of the Fathers:
“Do you fast? Then feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, visit the sick, do not forget the imprisoned, have pity on the tortured, comfort those who grieve and who weep, be merciful, humble, kind, calm, patient, sympathetic, forgiving, reverent, truthful and pious, so that God might accept your fasting and might plentifully grant you the fruits of repentance.” -St Basil
“Fasting is wonderful, because it tramples our sins like a dirty weed, while it cultivates and raises truth like a flower.” – St Basil
“To the extent that the flesh of the faster becomes thin and light, spiritual life arrives at perfection and reveals itself through wondrous manifestations, and the spirit performs its actions as if in a bodiless body. External feelings are shut off, and the mind that renounces the earth is raised up to heaven and is wholly immersed in the contemplation of the spiritual world.”- St. Ignatius
“There is a kind of fasting which is not bodily, a spiritual self-discipline which affects the soul; this abstinence is from evil, and it was as a means to this that our abstinence from food was prescribed. Therefore I say to you: Fast from evil-doing, discipline yourselves from covetousness, abstain from unjust profits, starve the greed of mammon [and] keep in your houses no snatched or stolen treasure. For what use is it to touch no meat and to wound your brother by evil-doing? What advantage is it to forgo what is your own and to seize unjustly what belongs to the poor?… Loosen every bond of injustice, undo the knots of covenants made by force. Break your bread with the hungry. Bring the poor and homeless into your house. When you see the naked, cover him; and despise not your own flesh.”- St Gregory of Nyssa
